Youth Development

STEP TT

Skills for a Technological and Diversified Economy (STEP TT), offers training to young people 18 – 35 years, in three areas: Introduction to Mobile Application Development; Web Design; and Coding.  Successful participants will receive an e-Certificate of Achievement or Participation.

DRIVE

Project Drive is an Automotive Servicing Initiative, focused on providing participants 18 -35 years, with the knowledge, skills and training necessary to perform preventative maintenance and diagnose and repair automotive, mechanical and electrical malfunctions. This training covers modules inclusive of Safety Communication and Tools, Braking Systems, Suspension and Steering Systems, Electrical Fundamentals, Periodic Maintenance and Scan Tools.   Successful DRIVE participants will receive a Certificate at the Craftsman Level.

 

The project is in alignment with the following pillars of the National Youth Policy: 

  • Pillar 1: Prioritising youth economic participation and empowerment.
  • Pillar 2: “Harnessing youth social and intellectual capital”

Pillar 8: Creating an enabling environment for positive youth development in Trinidad and Tobago.

YOU-TEC

The You-Tec short-course Programme offers vocational skills training, enhanced by life skills training, to provide trainees with employability skills, self-employment and entrepreneurial skills.  YouTec positions young persons, 16 to 35 years of age, to acquire entry-level skills to become successful business owners and/or increase their marketability, in the following areas:

  • Nail Technology,
  • Makeup Artistry
  • Preservative and Pickling
  • Culinary Arts
  • Barbering
  • Hairdressing/Braiding/Weaving

NLTP   

The National Leadership Training Programme is offered to young persons who are 16 – 35 years old and are serving members of youth-led and youth-serving organisations. The Programme runs for three (3) months and is implemented in partnership with the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, to offer training in the areas of Youth Development and Policy; Strategic Leadership and Planning; Civic Engagement, Advocacy and Voluntarism; Group Management, Conflict Management and Communication; Project Design, Implementation and Management and more.

The Programme is in alignment with the following pillars of the National Youth Policy:

Pillar 2: Harnessing Youth Social and Intellectual Capacity.

Pillar 3: Facilitating inclusive and active youth participation in the civic and democratic life of Trinidad and Tobago.

Pillar 8: Creating an enabling environment for positive youth development in Trinidad and Tobago.

BRIDGING SUCCESS 

This programme is implemented in collaboration with the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), to target young people 18 -35 years, who are unemployed and do not possess a full CESC Certificate.  This Programme was designed and specifically tailored to address the gap between secondary school education and tertiary-level education; and serves as an alternate training pathway to promote further intellectual development.  Bridging Success, therefore provides a conduit through which young persons can further their studies and achieve their academic goals.

NATIONAL YOUTH AWARDS      

The National Youth Awards Programme is designed to celebrate the achievements of young people 10 – 35 years, who contribute to national development.

PROJECT TRENDING    

Project Trending provides training to youth 18 – 35 years in two (2) cohorts: Social Media Management Training and Mastering Sales & Marketing.  The Programme targets small business owners and budding entrepreneurs, to equip them with the skills that will enable them to effectively market and manage a business on social media platforms.  The Social Media Management course is delivered online over a seven (7) week period; and the Mastering Sales and Marketing course is also delivered online, over an eight (8) week period.

YOUTH CARAVAN    

The Youth Career, Education and Health Caravan is designed to showcase the opportunities and resources that are available from Ministries, State Agencies and the Private Sector, that will advance the personal and professional development of young people.

YOUTH WEEK

Youth Week consists of a myriad of events, centered on and around the celebration of International Youth Day on August 12 each year.  These events are geared towards engaging our youth and Youth-led and Youth serving organizations; and highlight the creativity and successes of young artistes, business owners and agri-entrepreneurs. 

Youth Week is intended to transform the mindset of our youth, empowering them to take positive action, and providing them with information that would cater to their current and emerging needs, as well as celebrate their achievements.  Youth Week activities are aligned with the following Pillars of the National Youth Policy:

  • Pillar 1 – Prioritizing Youth Economic Participation and Empowerment
  • Pillar 2 – Harnessing Youth Social and Intellectual Capital
  • Pillar 4 – Creating safe spaces, peaceful communities, and environments
  • Pillar 5 – Accentuating Holistic Youth Health and Well-being
  • Pillar 6 – Creating an enabling environment for positive youth development in Trinidad and Tobago

YOUTH ON STAGE    

Youth on Stage – National Youth Festival and Talent Search, is an initiative that invests in youth creativity, excellence and productivity.  Youth on Stage (YoS) is an avenue for young, aspiring artistes, ages 10 to 35 years, to display and develop their talents. Throughout the talent search process, participants are provided with guidance, resources and industry insights, geared towards helping them to navigate and start a career in the creative and cultural sectors.  YoS promotes creative arts for sustainable development and supports the development of critical sectors such as; visual and performing arts, as avenues for youth personal and career development.

RELATIONSHIPS 101: TALK THE THING

This Programme engages young people at the community level, in interactive discussions on matters relating to their emotional wellness and relational status; and how these impact their overall development and life trajectory.  The Programme aims to engage young persons between the ages of twelve (12) to thirty-five (35) years in discussions regarding relationship issues to promote informed decision-making towards healthy relationships and emotional wellness.

National Service

NSPTT

 

This initiative promotes youth development, civic participation, and a sense of national pride. NSP-TT is structured to offer opportunities to gain marketable skills, enhance personal and social well-being and exemplify responsible citizenship. Participants may either be registered members of an authorized national service programme, or volunteers, who contribute to the betterment of their community and country.

40 UNDER 40    

The 40 Under 40 Programme allows Secondary School students, primarily Third and Fourth-Form students, to interact and engage with young “movers and shakers” who are established entrepreneurs, entertainers, sportsmen and fashion designers, among others.  Through the 40 Under 40 Programme, Youth Development Influencers share their testimonies and life experiences to enable participating students to improve their perspectives on life and create opportunities for success.

CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS (CCC)   

The Civilian Conservation Corps is implemented across eight (8) regions across Trinidad and Tobago. Trainees are exposed to life skills training, physical training and sports, agriculture, conservation and job training and are allowed to pursue a skill, in keeping with their desired career path.  Each Cycle consists of over 900 trainees.

MILITARY-LED ACADEMIC TRAINING PROGRAMME (MiLAT)

The MiLAT Programme targets young men, 16 – 20 years, who do not have a full CSEC Certificate. MiLAT provides a safe, structured and regulated setting within which young men interact with Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force personnel and non-military professionals; benefit from positive mentorship and reinforcement; and receive assistance rebuilding their ambitions, hopes and dreams.  During their 2-year tenure at MiLAT, Cadets attend classes and receive instruction in several academic subjects.

GAPP  

The Geriatric Adolescent Partnership Programme (GAPP) is a short-term training programme that bridges the gap between youths and the elderly in Trinidad and Tobago.  GAPP aims to share knowledge, encourage discipline and promote care for our society’s ageing population, through teaching persons, ages 17 to 35 years, how to provide geriatric care and companionship services.

RAPP 

RETIREE ADOLESCENT PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMME

The Retiree-Adolescent Partnership Programme (RAPP), utilizes the skills and experience of retired professionals and volunteers to provide psycho-social support, life-skills, and remedial and supplemental classes, to students pursuing the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) and the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate.

AMPLIFY     

AMPLIFY is a part-time 6-week programme designed to equip youth 16 – 35 years with practical and theoretical training for their advancement in the music and media industry.  Applicants can choose from one of six (6) modules in Digital Photography; Introduction to Video Production; Introduction to Graphic Design; Voice Training (Singing); Stage Presentation and Voice Presentation & Life Skills.  The Programme is administered in partnership with COSTAATT in Trinidad, as well as in Tobago.

INDUSTRIAL MECHANICAL APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME (I-MAP)

I-MAP is an initiative implemented in collaboration with the Heritage Petroleum Company Limited, that targets young nationals 18 to 35 years old, who have a keen interest in the industrial maintenance, electrical, mechanical and welding fields of the oil and gas industrial sector.  The I-MAP offers technical training and practical experience via on-the-job-training to help youth gain important employability skills thus enabling successful participants to secure employment.

INDUSTRIAL APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME (IAP)

The Industrial Apprenticeship Programme (IAP) is a strategic initiative of the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service (MYDNS) designed to create opportunities for young persons to learn on the job, put newfound skills into practice and build real-world experience.

HOIST    

HOIST affords young persons, 21-35 years old, the opportunity to train under the guidance and expertise of Trinidad Tower Crane Limited in one (1) of the following disciplines: Forklift, Boom Truck, Mobile Crane and Tower Crane Operations (with CVQ Level 3 Certification after seven (7) months); Forklift and Boom Truck Operations (with CVQ Certification after three (3) months; and Rigging and Banksman Training (with a Certificate of Completion after one (1) week).

PLAR

 

The Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition Programme, aims to assess and certify eligible persons 18 to 35 years, who have been operating in the technical and vocational field.  Through PLAR, they will be assessed and based on their level of skill, they will be awarded either the Trinidad and Tobago National Vocational Qualifications, the Caribbean Vocational Qualification, or Institution-based Certification, thus enabling them to enhance their employment capabilities and their competence towards further professional development.

PIPE    

The Plumbing training course has been designed to produce entry-level workers who can demonstrate the minimum level of occupational competency while adhering to occupational standards. Participants would have the relevant skills and knowledge for the use of tools and specialized equipment.

DROP  

The Drilling Rig Operations Programme (DROP) provides young persons 18-35 years, with technical/vocational skills-training in Drilling Rig Operations, such as Drilling Rig Roustabout, Drilling Rig Roughneck, Drilling Fluids and Circulation System and Drilling Rig Safety Management Operations; thus equipping them with the requisite skills and competencies to obtain gainful employment in the Oil and Gas sector.

FUSE    

The Linesman Programme provides theoretical and hands-on training in electricity basics, safety rules, electrical line and overhead pole construction, and meter and transformer installations.

Enterprise Development

FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

Friendly Societies in Trinidad and Tobago played a pivotal role in many people’s lives and were active in the promotion of the welfare of communities. Friendly Societies help their members to: Mobilize savings; Connect with Charitable Organisations; Join Medical Plans; Access Loans; Acquire Land; Access Education and Training and Make Financial Investments (UTC/Stocks/Bonds/shares).

The Friendly Societies Division is also responsible for the management and execution of projects and programmes for the Friendly Societies Division and the Friendly Societies Movement.

The Office of the Registrar of Friendly Societies and Building Societies is responsible for the supervision and regulation of the operations of Societies registered under the Friendly Societies Act – 47, registered friendly societies and 2 building societies.

THE CO-OPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT DIVISION (CDD)

The CDD was established to enable citizens to find solutions to their economic, social and cultural challenges, by adopting the cooperative way of life.

The Ministry of Youth Development and National Service (MYDNS) provides support to credit unions and other cooperative societies through education and training, seminars and workshops, registration, inspection, advisory, promotion, arbitration/mediation and reconstruction, and liquidation of societies.

NATIONAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT COMPANY (NEDCO)

NEDCO is a State Enterprise, established in 2002, to provide micro-finance services that assist in the development of a sustainable micro and small enterprise sector (MSEs). NEDCO offers entrepreneurial development services to help MSEs including; small business financing, entrepreneurial training, business assessment, mentorship and business advisory.
