New Advisory Friendly Societies Council to Focus on Youth Engagement

“The appointment of this new Advisory Friendly Society Council will make the Movement more attractive to the young people of Trinidad and Tobago,” according the Honourable Foster Cummings, Minister of Youth Development and National Service, at the appointment of the new Advisory Friendly Societies Council on Friday, October 01, 2021, at the Government Campus Plaza, Port of Spain.

“This Appointment is yet another step that supports the Ministry’s thrust towards revitalisation, resuscitation, amalgamation, and promotion of the Friendly Societies,” said Minster Cummings, as he presented Letters to the nine-member Council to serve for a term of 2 years. 

The Council, comprising Mr. Michael Alonzo Seales, as Chairman/Registrar of Friendly Societies, Mrs. Chandra Mohammed, Friendly Societies Officer II – Vice Chairman, and Members Imtiaz Ali, Tova Lin Sandy, Mervyn Franklin, George James, Gachelle Gilkes-Edwards, Gail Sooknarine and Kareem Marcelle, has as its primary obligation, to ‘dynamically and vigorously boost Friendly and Building Societies’ growth, development, and expansion.’

Also speaking at the ceremony were Mr. Farook Hosein – Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth Development and National Service and Mr. Michael Alonzo Seales – Registrar of the Friendly and Building Societies Division. 

Over one year ago, the Office of the Registrar of Friendly Societies was re-assigned to the Ministry of Youth Development and National Service (MYDNS). The Office of the Registrar of Friendly Societies and Building Societies is responsible for the supervision and regulation of the operations of Societies registered under the Friendly Societies Act Chap. 32:50 and Building Societies Act Chap. 33:04 respectively. The Friendly Societies Division is also responsible for the management and execution of projects and programmes for the Friendly Societies Division and the Friendly Societies Movement.

The Ministry of Youth Development and National Service remains committed to bringing all stakeholders together to promote youth development and encouraging civic-minded citizens to contribute to National Service across Trinidad and Tobago.
