Port of Spain, October 08, 2024: The Ministry of Youth Development and National Service (MYDNS), today, presented cheques to 15 members of the De-Registered Tunapuna Rising Star Friendly Society, at a ceremony at its Head Office in St. Clair.
The Rising Star Society was in existence from January 25, 1918; providing benefits to its members and conducting community outreach programmes. The deregistration of the Tunapuna Rising Star Friendly Society and liquidation of its assets was managed by the Friendly Societies Division and published in Gazette No. 171 of November, 2003, in accordance with the Friendly Societies Act Chap. 32:50. At the time of the deregistration, the Tunapuna Rising Star Friendly Society was 85 years old.
Permanent Secretary Narine Charran, who delivered remarks during the ceremony, stated, “Although the Friendly Societies Movement is faced with challenges, we at the MYDNS recognize the importance of the Movement in the economy of Trinidad and Tobago”. PS Charran congratulated the members and expressed, “Notwithstanding the deregistration and liquidation of the Tunapuna Rising Star Friendly Society, I trust that your experiences as members over the years were worthwhile and your Friendly Society assisted you in achieving your goals, serving in some instances multiple generations”.
Registrar of the Friendly Societies, Michael Alonzo Seales, congratulated the members, for their vision and tenacity in supporting the Society. He stated, “With this long overdue distribution, I urge you to invest wisely.” The Registrar highlighted that the Friendly Societies Division of the MYDNS is working on distributing the assets of five additional Friendly Societies to its members.
